About - solutions for a subculture

I was sitting at the office, thinking about jiu-jitsu instead of working like most of us do, when the idea came to me. I felt like there was so much attention being given to fighting in the mass media yet it all focused around blood, gore and skulls. I personally don't look at fighting in this light. Fighting to me is as beautiful as a Russian ballet. In my opinion there was no BJJ brand that represented the beauty and elegance we all experience when participating in the gentle art.

I was looking to create a brand that had meaning, that word that came to me was ORIGIN. The beauty of the word was within its meaning, and within the word was one of the most essential pieces of equipment we all come to rely on and our core product at ORIGIN... the GI. I also wanted to represent the process one goes through in their BJJ journey and I discovered an inverted Japanese Tomoye Samurai symbol. For Origin, this symbol represents the 5 levels one takes on their journey to black belt. Each level has a beginning and an end. As you progress through the art, you also improve yourself both physical and mentally. Each level intertwines with the last completing a cycle that never actually ends.

The products I design come from my own experiences in the gentle art as a competitor, teacher and student of the game. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a subculture and my goal is to cater to this subculture with both training products and everyday lifestyle gear and apparel. The design of each product represents my passion for jiu-jitsu, the beauty I find in this sport and the ebb and flow of a perfect roll.
